February 10, 1934 - Editorial - Why So Fast?, by George Lorimer
One effect upon the public mind of the recent expansion of Government activities and expenditures is that those now in power are in a tremendous and breathless hurry to reach the millennium. Numerous observers, mostly friendly, have pointed out that the Administration has a double and conflicting purpose - recovery and reform. These observers go further, and say that the rapidity with which reform is being pushed interferes with recovery - which certainly urgent if anything is. (pg. 22)
Comment: It is interesting to note that unemployment was still around the same levels in 1939 than it was in 1933 when FDR took office. All of this massive expansion of federal executive power combined with massive spending did not bring America out of the depression. All that did was prolong it. What brought America out of the depression was the second World War.
